This is an incredibly important and excellent essay, analysis, and worldview philosophy. What has been rather tragic for me for many years now, is the recognition that so many people — religious or not — and even whole nations (think America for sure), have completely lost the ability to feel individually guilty or even in error. As usual, I will at this point recommend the seminal work on this idea by Kathryn Schulz, in her brilliant book (and Ted Talk) “Being Wrong”. Jennifer Jacquet — thank you for this very important addition to our idea of what we have lost in terms of thinking of our lives, and our very planetary existence as communal. For any community or species or world to exist, there must not only be a sense of love for others, but a sense of guilt for doing the wrong things. Guilt or shame that leads to change and reconstruction, that is. Maybe because of the Corona Virus foisted paradigm shift, we really can apply what may be a new found skill in shaming others (or our selves as necessary) for the sake of our physical and moral “salvation”, and apply it to the critical problems of the future in order to get ourselves on board for the big work ahead in terms of climate-salvation. Thank you for your bravery, honesty, and excellence in this.
