You are so correct but it is actually much deeper and rather more frightening for the false hopes of these folks, than even this attitude of “believers” that you write of. It comes from the current religion calling itself “Christianity” believing that all you have to do is be “saved” when what the God of Abraham and of Christ actually demands is that we live as disciples. I am a failure but at least am becoming more cognizant and humble, I hope. What these people are offering and living, sadly, is what Bonhoeffer calls “cheap grace” and has led to even more misunderstanding and abuse (think current political climate) than being as irritating as this woman was. I too, am a recovering Baptist and I wish you some true joy in spiritual journey and that your struggles with depression may not make you feel alone, but rather determined to care for your soul, as Thomas Merton might say, and to be your very most wonderful self.
